Apollo vs Deis: What are the differences?

What is Apollo? GraphQL server for Express, Connect, Hapi, Koa and more. Build a universal GraphQL API on top of your existing REST APIs, so you can ship new application features fast without waiting on backend changes.

What is Deis? Open Source PaaS that builds upon Docker and CoreOS to provide a lightweight PaaS with a Heroku-inspired workflow. Deis can deploy any application or service that can run inside a Docker container. In order to be scaled horizontally, applications must follow Heroku's 12-factor methodology and store state in external backing services.

Apollo and Deis can be categorized as "Platform as a Service" tools.

"From the creators of Meteor" is the top reason why over 8 developers like Apollo, while over 15 developers mention "12-factor methodology" as the leading cause for choosing Deis.

Apollo and Deis are both open source tools. It seems that Apollo with 7.53K GitHub stars and 935 forks on GitHub has more adoption than Deis with 6.12K GitHub stars and 863 GitHub forks.

Decisions about Apollo and Deis
Márton Danóczy

We wanted to save as much time as possible when writing our back-end, therefore Apollo was out of the question, we went for an auto-generated API instead. Hasura looked good in the beginning, but we wanted to retain the ability to add a few manual resolvers and modifications to auto-generated ones, which ruled out Hasura. Postgraphile with its Plug-In architecture was the right choice for us, we never regretted it!
