The Top 100+ Developer Tools 2023

Welcome back to the Annual StackShare Awards! ๐ŸŽŠ (Check out last year's awards here).

This year we analyzed well over 12 million data points shared by you- the StackShare community- to bring you these rankings ๐Ÿ“ˆ

There's well over 100 tools in this list so make sure to bookmark this so you can come back to it later ๐Ÿ“Œ

ICYMI: in 2023 we announced the release of The Tech Stack File - the universal standard for tech stack data. techstack.yml is a single file that lists the entire tech stack of a Git repo, with metadata about each technology. You can read more about it in the announcement and in the press release. Try out the free Stack File GitHub App today!

We also released over 40 new StackShare Enterprise features! Including tons of API improvements and new endpoints, Tech Radar visualization (pictured below), additional report filters, profile updates, dashboard improvements, new multi-org features, tons of new package manager support, and more!

Check out the full list of new enterprise features here.

And now, the winners of the StackShare Top Tools Awards 2023:

As usual, this is our biggest undertaking of the year- we comb through a massive data set to find the best tools that you should know about, try out, or should already be using. We aggregated usage from 1M+ tech stacks , over 10M+ follows , and tons more developer comments, reviews, and votes (more on methodology below) . Letโ€™s dive in!

New Tool of the Year (2023)

#1: LangChain

2023 was the year of AI in developer tools land. Week after week we saw new language models, LLM tooling, and data solutions being released. Amongst the thousands of tools that were introduced in 2023, there was one that emerged as the dominant building block for AI: LangChain. While it technically debuted in 2022, it took off last year as developers tried to keep up with all the new models and the changes to those models. LangChain became so popular largely because it was viewed as a wrapper around all the most popular LLMs, making it easier for your application to utilize more than one model and also keep up with changes more easily. While there are pros and cons to that approach, it's clear that LangChain struck a chord with the developer community. Congratulations to the entire LangChain team on building an incredibly valuable open source framework and now an entire community. LangChain has an MIT license and has over 75K stars on GitHub. Head over to LangChain's website to learn more.

Top Community Members (2023)

These rankings are brought to you, by the entire StackShare community of over one million developers. You make these awards possible by sharing not only what you're using, but more importantly, why you chose your stack. If you aren't familiar, Stack Advice is an easy way to get and give advice on specific tech stack decisions.

So we'd like to thank and recognize the community members that chose to give their fellow developers advice in their time of need, on all sorts of important tech stack decisions.

While there are thousands of developers that help each other every year on StackShare- the 20 developers below went above and beyond the call of duty to give their peers advice over and over again.

We'd like to thank everyone who asked the community for advice and everyone who chimed in with their recommendations ๐Ÿ™ See all the Stack Decisions and Stack Advice these special developers shared by checking out their stack decision feeds below!

Methodology:

For tool rankings, scores are calculated using a combination of number of stacks a tool was added to, number of votes, number of Stack Decisions shared, number of one-liners, number of follows, and number of profile views for the year. New Tool rankings were calculated from tools that were created and added to StackShare in 2023 with follows and views being weighted more heavily than other metrics since new tools donโ€™t just enter stacks overnight.

As usual, we removed Git from the rankings in the DevOps rankings since many developers don't list it in their stack (and instead only list Git collaboration platforms).

If you have any questions about the rankings, drop us a line at team@stackshare.io!
